Ceredigion has two universities and students are playing their part in the community.
Their efforts are being recognised this week as the UK celebrates the 21st Student Volunteering Week (beginning February 7).
Aberystwyth University law student Rhiannon Hanniford-Hanks has been volunteering for Ceredigion Citizens Advice since March last year.
She completed her adviser training and is now a valued member of the volunteer adviser team.
“I was first introduced to Citizens Advice by my personal tutor at the University. I wanted to take this opportunity to develop new skills and gain some valuable experience. This volunteering has allowed me to gain some more confidence and enhance my CV. My volunteering also allows me to help those in the community in these especially difficult times,” she said.
Covid rules mean that Rhiannon works from home but is supported by the Citizens Advice staff team.
“I enjoy working with my colleagues they are all very helpful, supportive and friendly. I enjoy speaking to clients and find it rewarding when I am able to help them, I have spoken to some lovely people during my volunteering,” she said.
And the training has helped with her law degree.
“Certain topics of the training I had to complete prior to volunteering were helpful with my studies. For example, I had to complete some training on legal frameworks and contract law. This helped to expand my knowledge in this area and develop my understanding. As I continue to volunteer I learn more and this in turn helps me with my studies. Volunteering has allowed me to apply some of the skills I have already leant throughout my degree.”
And Rhiannon is confident the skills she has learned will help her in her future career.
“It has helped me to develop skills outside of my degree that will be useful for a legal career. Volunteering gives me an insight into current issues that are impacting the public. I have developed my listening, communicating and professionalism skills by volunteering.”
She urged fellow students – and anyone interested in volunteering – to get in touch with Citizens Advice.
“Take your time with your training and enjoy the experience of volunteering. Everyone is very supportive and volunteering is very beneficial both for future careers, yourself and you help others,” she said.
