This May, we’ve been supporting the Mental Health Foundation's campaign to raise awareness by wearing green during Mental Health Awareness Week and getting everyone moving more to look after their own mental health.
The team at CAB have been promoting their own mental health by getting out and about in the spirit of the campaign. We've been exploring new parts of the country, tackling 10k walks, and recruiting our families and pets to join in alongside us. We've also taken part in the Mental Health Foundation's #WearitGreen challenge held on Thursday 16th May. Wardrobes were raided for all things green, face glitter was donned, and cakes were consumed with all proceeds raised going to support this all-important cause.
We're all aware of the benefits of movement on our physical wellbeing, but its impact on our mental health is equally as important. By increasing our levels of activity, even for as little as 15 minutes a day, we can lower stress and anxiety levels, improve our mood and confidence and increase our chances of a good nights sleep - all vital for promoting good mental health.
In theory, moving more to promote better mental health should be an achievable goal for all. However, here at CAB we understand that sometimes it's just not that easy. Everyday barriers to physical activity - cost, weather, time - are proven to hit harder for people already facing disadvantage of some kind. If you're struggling to pay your bills, or worrying about being made homeless for example; finding the energy or motivation to get moving can be difficult. The wider circumstances of our lives often take priority, with our mental health suffering as a consequence.
CEO Juliet Morris says "Good mental health shouldn't be a luxury, it's a basic necessity for us all. Every day, we support people with problems that are damaging their mental health or are the result of an ongoing mental health condition. We're not counsellors or health experts but we can help people manage their way through those problems, especially when their mental health is low. We also understand the importance of looking after our own mental health. It's fundamental to the team's ability to delivering reliable, top quality information and advice across the county, and beyond."
Our team of trained advisers and volunteers offer fully holistic advice, really getting to the heart of people's problems, tackling all of the wider issues - not just the presenting problems. We believe that in helping people to secure their futures, we can also help them to secure better mental health.
If your mental health is being impacted upon by a problem you're facing, you can find advice and support on our national website or get in touch with us via our Get Advice page.
